SALLY KIM
Sally started playing the cello at the age of four and continued to learn the instrument after immigrating to New Zealand at the age of six. She is completing her Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Classical Performance on the cello at the University of Auckland with Edith Salzmann.
She started playing the cello at the age of 6 and she received ABRSM grade 8 at the age of
13. She won two major national awards in New Zealand including New Zealand Secondary
Schools Chamber Music Contest for two consecutive years, 2011 and 2012, and
Pettman/Royal Overseas League Scholarship in 2013. She also achieved some successes in
International competitions such as, being awarded highest mark in her category in Padova
International Competition in Italy 2013, and also, as a cellist of Trinity Trio, her group was one of the finalist of The International Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria, 2015.
Sally has made many appearances in international stage since the age of 17. She was invited
to Shanghai International Music Festival where she performed in Shanghai International
School and Suzhou International School. She also appeared in concert at the Pablo Casals
Music Festival in France, Lake Garda Summer Music Festival and The Chigiana International
Music Festival in Italy, St James Piccadily in London, Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, Lake District Summer Festival all in UK and was selected as a representative of The University of
Auckland, giving a performance in Beijing Conservatorium of Music through Asia Pacific
Alliance of Music. In 2016, Sally was invited to record a newly composed piece called “The Spirit of ASEAN” in Thailand. Through the support of The New Zealand Embassies across the ASEAN countries, she managed to give eight recitals with the violinist Stella Kim in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Timor-Leste accordingly. In the same year, in collaboration with CMNZ, she completed an encompass tour in New Zealand with Trinity Trio and successfully showcased in ten concerts.
Sally had masterclasses with world-class artists such as David Geringas, Antonio Meneses, David Takeno, Stephan Schrader, Ramon Jaffé, Peter Hörr, Alvin Wong, Alexander Gebert, Greg Sauer, Julian Jacobson, Michael Dussek and Anthony Marwood.
She currently holds a position as a principal cellist at the University of Auckland Symphony Orchestra and she is pursuing her career as a soloist and chamber musician.
